The story of "Success" told in Sideways

Sideways was described "Losers' story" by many film critics. I kind of agree to a certain extent. The main character, Miles Raymond, played by Paul Giamatti is presumably a writer, but none of his works were ever published. His body, Jack, played by Thomas Haden Church, is presumably an actor, but he (that is, the character Thomas Haden Church plays) never featured in a big movie or anything like that. Maya played by Virginia Madsen is just a waitress though Maya knows a lot about wine. Stephanie played by Sandra Oh is one of those promiscuous girls; she ends up sleeping with a guy who's engaged (Jack), and the short romance inevitably ends in disaster. But there are many good stories in Sideways, and I think one of great stories told in the film is the story of "Success".

What is success? Many say it's money after all. I don't disagree completely, but it is a result of success, not the success itself. House, fancy car, yacht, condo, and what have you. In my opinion, they all can be results of success, but none of those are success itself. So what is success then? I think the process in which you reach your ultimate goal is success; the result of success is not success itself. Miles Raymond never gets published, but it simply means that the audience does not see the result of success in the film. Miles Raymond never makes living from writing (novels) in the film. His love life isn't that great, either. He actually gets dumped, though you see that he has good chance of winning his girl back at the end of the film. But you also see the process, what he goes through, while you see his endless failures. You see his moving from one failure to another with some hope and some enthusiasm. Moving from one failure to another with enthusiasm, if that is not success, then what is?
