The Incredibles (the movie) sucks
The Incredibles (the movie) sucks? No, it's actually a very good movie, but I feel like I'm obliged to write things that lack in the movie, The Incredibles. Again, The Incredibles is a good movie, but I want to write things that have some meaning and that are hopefully interesting to read. So, I don't think that there is any utility to praising the movie like hundreds of people have already done. Ok, so, what are missing in The Incredibles?
1. The movie tries to capture what consumerism is and what it is doing to us in this society. The movie does this all right, but the movie does not present any solution to this problem. The movie tells a good story, and the audience generally enjoys how the story goes, but if you watch the movie again and follow the story closely, no answer to the problem, consumerism, is presented.
1.2. In addition to consumerism, the movie presents number of problems that the modern society has created. More specifically, capitalist society is losing its balance. It often criticizes socialism and communism, and thus, tries to say that capitalism is the right idea. The truth is that capitalism often fails to observe its own problems, and it often tries to escape from criticism by criticizing other social theories and structures. The Incredibles shows problems in capitalism in such a way that the audience can see and understand so easily, and the movie deserves a lot of credit for that. However, the movie focuses on telling happy story in the end, and it presents no solution to various problems in capitalism.
2. The Incredibles creates everything in animation, buildings, chairs, tables, clothes, etc. The world of The Incredibles looks pretty, but there is such a disconnect between this world and real world. Specifically, the world of The Incredibles is almost completely disconnected from history. Buildings in The Incredibles are actually modeled after those in 50s in US, but buildings are not designed like buildings in 50s that connect to history in 50s; only appearance is modeled after. Some may argue that this is very difficult to do in animation, but there are animation movies that do this including "Tonari no Totoro".
3. This sounds a little harsh, but I think I should state this. Animation movies from Pixer including The Incredibles are still essentially "cute" movies. They are not incredible movies, nor are they kind of movies that people appreciate even 50 years from now. We have not seen movies that that statue of classics such as Annie Hall (1977), Chinatown (1974), The Graduate (1967) and Top Hat (1935) yet.
I want to say this again; The Incredibles is a good movie. It's just that there is no utility to complimenting and praising the movie again, and I wanted to say something that hasn't been said yet about this movie.
