L'Auberge espagnole

This is one of the best movies I watched recently. Actually I ended up watching 3 times. It's partly because I wanted to write about this movie, but still there aren't that many movies that I can watch 3 times and still enjoy.

Initially, I thought that this is another movie starring Audrey Tautou, because the cover of DVD has her picture in the center; I guess that she has become such a big star since Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, and the marketing department decided to put her face on the cover. I had pretty high expectation based on the assumption that she plays the leading role. It turned out that she does not play the leading role, and she actually plays a rather small role. However, this turned out to be a great movie.

There is so much in this movie, but one of more impressive aspects of the movie is the diversity of characters and how they are connected. The movie takes place in Barcelona where people speak Catalan. But Barcelona is in Spain where people speak Castilian (Spanish). The main character is a young Frenchman. His roommates are from England, Barcelona, Germany, Italy, Denmark and Belgium. They are just roommates in the beginning, but they form a bond in the end. Barcelona is just a place where the main character is visiting at the beginning, but the city really becomes a place where he lives his life at the end of the movie. The language, Spanish becomes a part of him as well; since he lives in Barcelona, he also learns Catalan.

Diversity itself makes the movie fun, and watching how they all become a whole, connected people and places, is very entertaining. But there is also an important underlining message, and I guess that it puts this movie a level above others. While we all live in interconnected world, few realize that the world is interconnected. There are TV programs and books that attempt to show how the world is interconnected, but even then, few realize the fact. The movie captures this problem, and the movie makes the problem into something wonderful. This makes this movie a bit special.
