Why many of Hollywood movies simply do not work
I was watching upcoming movie trailers, and one of trailers that I watched was "The Bridge of San Luis Rey". The movie has pretty impressive list of casts, but I don't have any high expectation. The trailer actually reminded me of why so many of Hollywood movies simply do not work; there is a good chance that this movie "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" would fall into the category of Hollywood-movies-that-simply-do-not-work. I want to explore why many of Hollywood movies simply do not work, and I take this movie "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" as an example.
1. Too many Hollywood movies try to make adjustment on their side to appeal to wide range of audience instead of try to make good movies.
1.2. Too many Hollywood movies cut scenes that are supposedly inappropriate for children to give PG/PG13 rating. This, in theory, allows them to market movies to much wider range of audience. However, in many cases, this completely takes out the quality of the movie, and thus, the movie will not succeed (financially).
1.3. Another adjustment that they make is that they take (both true and fictional) stories that took place in foreign land. Yet all actors and actresses speak crystal clear American English; obviously, this completely destroys authenticity. Making movies accessible rarely work, and this is a prime example of that, and "The Bridge of San Luis Rey" illustrates this point.
1.4. There is no need for any movie to explain how and why in detail. Planting a seed, giving a hint is sufficient in most cases. Too many movies have many more lines and scenes than they ever need.
2. Too many movies are too confirmative and conservative. Movies do not have to provide view point from the left, but they need to have critical view point no matter where in the liberal - conservative political spectrum movies fall. Too many movies give flat boring messages, or they have no message at all essentially.
