Rear Window

This is one of the most popular films of all time, so number of reviews have been written already. I certainly do not challenge to write a review more insightful than other reviews, nor do I raise points that other reviews never raised. However, I still want to write about the film because I really enjoyed watching the film.

1. Rear Window is a detective story, but it has philosophical elements as well. Rear Window shows a collection of windows that show different people's lives. A young single woman; she is a dancer and is very popular, but she is longing for the love of her life coming back from military service. A young couple who just got married. Great excitement at the beginning, yet they are getting bored of their routine after a while. A pianist. While he enjoys rather lavish life, he has his share of difficulties. A single woman in her mid age. An older couple who enjoy each other's company, but no child. Then, a troubled couple; wife is ill, and husband is getting tired of taking care of her. Finally, our hero and heroine. Accomplished bachelor photographer and his young and beautiful girlfriend from Park Avenue. They present various stages in relationship, and also they present different types of relationships. Watching various minor events in the movie alone makes you think about human relationship and life in general.

2. I cannot help mentioning that Grace Kelly looks so beautiful and charming in Rear Window. Her presence symbolizes golden age of Hollywood. She is youthful and beautiful. Also she looks very healthy both physically and mentally. Many actresses today are very good looking, but I have to say that many of them do not have the healthiest look. Too slender, a bit tired, peculiar makeup, peculiar dress, etc. Few actresses today have plain classic look. Grace Kelly is a classic beauty, and it is very pleasant to watch her.

3. The climax scene is good. This is where the film literally speeds up to create excitement and thrill. Unlike many modern films, Rear Window doesn't shoot the scene from hundred different angles or extremely difficult angle. Neither there is any special effect, nor is there any obnoxious sound effect. The only thing that Hitchcock does here is to roll the film differently, and it works great.

As I said, I'm pretty sure that many people already wrote about what I wrote here, but I still wanted to write about this film to appreciate it more. I might add a comment or two on the film after I watch a couple of more Hitchcock films and other films in his era.
