Nueve reinas (Nine Queens)
There are number of movies whose main characters are con men/women. Not all movies tell a good story, but Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) tells a good story. Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) works well as a movie. What make Nueve reinas (Nine Queens) work?
1. The storyline makes a logical sense. The storyline is a bit complicated, but the whole storyline makes sense. Good details.
2. One of main characters, Juan, played by Gastón Pauls, has his objectives in the beginning, and he pursues these objectives. The storyline is a bit complicated as I mentioned, but his objectives are clear, and we can actually see that as we watch the movie closely.
2.2. One of his objectives is to raise money to get his father out of jail (Details are actually not discussed in the movie. Probably Juan needs money for his father to get bail. Probably Juan needs money to hire a lawyer. We know that Juan needs the money and it is urgent). Another objective is to prove that he can successfully execute the biggest job in his life. There is yet another objective; he wants to help his girlfriend to avenge her brother, Marcos, played by Ricardo Darín, who is Juan's partner. These objectives are not exactly related to con. These are human stories, and kind of stories that we all share whether we make honest living, steal money or make living as a con artist. This is why we can relate to the story.
Comment on DVD:
I think this is the one I watched. It's a plain DVD, meaning that DVD only has the movie, Nine Queens, and that's it. No extra features, no commentary, nothing. It's a great movie, and it is a well-structured movie, so it would be nice if we can hear what the director has to say about the movie, but this DVD doesn't give us that opportunity.
