What did not work in Melinda and Melinda?
I watched Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda recently. I am a big Woody Allen fan, and it was entertaining to me, but I have to admit that the movie was not his best. In fact, quite a few things in the movie didn't really work out in my opinion.
1. Woody Allen hired number of younger actors and actresses in the movie. The audience was supposed to believe that characters in the movie are kind of people who love classic music and Opera. They have great taste in food and drinks. They are kind of people who understand Niche, Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, and they casually references these writers and philosophers. However, this was simply not believable. From what I recall, none of or close to none of actors and actresses played characters who love and appreciate classics; classic music, Opera, classic paintings, literature and 30 years old Scots. I don't know if they are classics people in their real lives or not. They might be, but characters they played just didn't seem like they were.
2. References to Nuremberg Trial is funny only when Woody Allen himself and other classic established actors and actresses make reference to it (even then it is tough to make this sound funny). I even doubt if these actors and actresses in Melinda and Melinda know anything about Nuremberg Trial in real life. They do not seem like they're highly intelligent people in real life (no offence).
3. Characters in Melinda and Melinda play actors, actresses, and movie directors. If I have to generalize today's actors, actresses, and movie directors, I do not think that they are the most well-read or educated people (no offence). This is a rather sad thing to say, but I believe that's how the movie industry is today, yet actors, actresses, and movie directors in Melinda and Melinda are not quite like that (as far as we listen to their dialogue). There seems to be a pretty big gap between the movie industry in real life and the movie industry portrayed in Melinda and Melinda. The whole story does not seem very believable.
Comment on DVD:
There is only one edition of Melinda and Melinda on DVD, and it's a plain DVD. No extra features, no commentary. It's too bad, Woody Allen is one of selected directors who have many interesting things to say. Though Woody Allen may not be the greatest mind of our generation, his movies are often philosophical, and I'm sure that many of Woody Allen fans would like to know what he has to say about his movies.
