A little bit of luck helps to make a great movie
One of the greatest scenes in Monster's Ball is that Hank drives to the prison where he works for the last time. It is raining hard, and he crosses the river (canal?). His car is on the boat and he is inside the car. It just keeps raining until the boat reaches the other side of the river. It is not only a visually stunning scene but also it symbolizes changing state of his mind and his life. The rain purifies his soul, and he is becoming a new person. He does not have soul before the scene; he is more or less a walking dead. He is physically healthy, but his soul is completely dead. After he crosses the river, he start showing emotions and feelings. He slowly but recognizably start changing.
The scene says so much about Hank Grotowski and it is a critical point of the movie; however, those who made the movie apparently had no plan to film the scene like that initially. It was raining outside, and they decided to film under the rain on the spot; the script did not mention about the rain or how it purifies Hank's soul. It was purely accidental. A little bit of luck helps to make a great movie.
