Syriana is not terribly bad, but it's not that impressive

Syriana is not terribly bad, but it's not that impressive. The followings are some of things that did not impress me.

1. Bryan Woodman (played by Matt Damon) survives and goes back to his family in the end. It seems that the movie wants to show at least one innocent and honest family man to represent value of honesty and decency; however, it does not fit into the big picture too well. Those who have power get their deal (corporate merger) in the end, and the righteous man Prince Nasir Al-Subaai (played by Alexander Siddig) gets killed. Bryan Woodman does to seek justice, nor is his life destroyed in the middle of the deal. His position is very ambiguous, and thus, it only makes the movie's message unclear.

2. All entities in the movie are fictitious entities. While I find some similarities between entities in the movie and real entities, the movie enforces the audience to believe that it is a fiction after all. If the movie attempts to explore currents events in the real world, I think that some entities need to be real entities or they are so similar that the audience can identify real entities that have different names in the movie.

3. Assassination plot of Prince Nasir Al-Subaai seems too simplistic. It is true that some of high ranking government officials get assassinated in the middle east from time to time, but he is a prince after all. It seems to take too short a time for CIA to plan the assassination of Prince Nasir Al-Subaai and executes the plan.
